Pre-1940’s
In 1906 at the age of 17, Steve Pandol
emigrated from Brusje, a Croatian village on the island of Hvar
(an island in the Adriatic off of the Dalmatian coast), which
at that time was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. He came
through Ellis Island together with millions of other European
immigrants with not much more than the clothes he wore. Not
knowing the language and hardly a person here, Steve Pandol
worked his way across the country eventually settling in Fresno
County where he joined with other Croatians to work and farm
collectively. In 1921 he wrote back to Brusje asking if
Margaret, then 18 years old would consent to come to America
and be his wife. Margaret agreed and came to America. Their
marriage produced three sons that survived to adulthood Jack,
Matt and Steve Jr.
